NiSi UV Filter

Today the primary purpose of UV filter is simply to protect the front element of the lens. In the old days of film they were used to block UV rays reaching the film. All modern DSLR cameras have a UV/Infra-Red filter in front of the sensor so they no longer serve the purpose for what they were original intended but still highly recommended if you value your lenses.

Neutral Density ND8 Filter ($15)

A Neutral Density Filter is used to reduce the amount of light coming into the lens. This allows the photographer to either reduce the shutter speed or open up the aperture. Reducing the shutter speed will allow the photographer to create motion blur for subjects such as waterfalls. Opening up the aperture in bright light will allow the photographer to create shallower depths of field than would have been possible. An ND8 filter would block 3 stops of light and an ND16 Filter would block 4 stops of light.
